Analisis Ornamen dan Kaligrafi pada Masjid Tarbiyah Kota Medan (Kajian Semiotika)

Abstract

This study discussed the ornaments and calligraphy in the Tarbiyah Mosque in Medan City. The purpose of this study was to use a semiotic method to determine the meaning of ornaments and calligraphy at the Tarbiyah Mosque in Medan City, as well as the type and position of calligraphy and poetry selection found there. The theory used is the semiotic theory put forward by Roland Barthes in analyzing the semiotic approach and the Malay ornament theory put forward by Prawoto in analyzing Malay ornaments and then the calligraphy theory put forward by Sirojuddin in analyzing calligraphy. This study was classified as a field research (Field Research) since it employed descriptive methodologies and was supported by library research (Library Research),which gathered information from pertinent scientific books. The results of the study showed that the Tarbiyah Mosque of Medan City has types of ornaments that have meaning in semiotics, including: Arabic ornaments and Malay ornaments. There are 3 types of Arabic ornaments in this mosque, namely: Arabic ornaments with circular archetype, Arabic ornaments with twelve square archetype, and Arabic ornaments with eight square archetype. There are 10 types of Malay ornaments in this mosque, including: shoots of bamboo shoots ornaments, ants ornaments, julun kacang ornaments, kale twine ornaments, ricih wajid ornaments, larat cloud ornaments, fern leaf ornaments, dependent bee ornaments, sekawan duck ornaments and tampuk pinang ornaments. Then at the Tarbiyah Mosque in Medan City there are 7 types of (Khat), namely calligraphy Khat Tsulust, Naskhi, Khufi, Diwani, Diwani Jali, Riq'ah and Farisi and found the placement of the position and meaning of the selection of verses in calligraphy at the Tarbiyah Mosque in Medan City, namely in the Mihrab, on the wall above the window and on the wall of the entrance to the Mosque.
