This thesis analyzes and describes the issues faced by refugees in Australia. As a country that has ratified the 1951 Convention, Australia is often chosen as a destination by refugees and asylum seekers seeking protection or a decent life. However, with the increasing number of arrivals of refugees in Australia, the country began to issue punitive decisions against refugees. This resulted in human rights violations for refugees in Australia during the years 2013-2015. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method by means of descriptive-qualitative. Based on the research results, it is shown that in the years 2013-2015, Australia violated the human rights of refugees. During that period, Australia, led by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, implemented Operation Sovereign Border (OSB). In its implementation, OSB would turn back boats carrying refugees and asylum seekers to transit countries. This is in direct contradiction to the 1951 Convention, which upholds the non-refoulement policy. Mandatory detention policies for refugees and asylum seekers using boats also became a problem. This undoubtedly resulted in negative impacts such as violence, mental disturbances, trauma to children, and the separation of families. Consequently, there were numerous responses and criticisms both domestically and internationally towards Australia due to its handling of refugees.en_US
