Introduction: The main cause of periodontitis is bacterial plaque. Bacteria that penetrate periodontal tissue will interact with the host response. The interaction between Currently developed medicinal plant-based ingredients that are believed to have antibacterial properties with minimal side effects. One of the herbal plants that have antibacterial power and the potential to be used as mouthwash is Andaliman (Zanthoxylum achantopodium DC). Compounds that have been identified from andaliman fruit are alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. In addition, Andaliman also contains extracts that are mostly terpenoids that act as antimicrobials.
Objective: This study aims to inhibit andaliman extract hydrogel against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria and evaluate pocket depth and BoP after Scaling with and without andaliman extract hydrogel in rat periodontitis model.
Methods: This study is a laboratory experimental study Post Test Only Control Group Design to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of andaliman extract hydrogel against Porphyromonas gingivalis. and only the control group in 30 Wistar rats induced periodontitis with Porphyromonas gingivalis. with clinical parameters (Bleeding on Probing / and pocket depth).
Results: The results of this study showed the largest inhibition zone at a concentration of 25%, namely 20.7 ± 0.61mm, and there was an improvement in clinical parameters (BoP and depth of pockets) which decreased significantly in the Scaling group accompanied by the application of andaliman hydrogel extract statistically significant results (p <0.05). The test results using the Mann-Whitney correlation test showed that the clinical parameters were significantly correlated (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The application of andaliman extract hydrogel as a supporting therapy plays a role in periodontal healing because it can reduce pocket depth and the of pathogenic bacteria.
