Porphyromonas ginigivalis is the main bacterium that plays a special role
in the formation of periodontal abscesses which are local purulent infections in
periodontal tissue and are often found in patients with periodontitis. Initial
treatment for periodontal abscess can be done by using antimicrobial agents or
antibiotics. Resistance to antibiotics is becoming increasingly common nowadays,
making herbal medicines an alternative due to the effectiveness of the organic
compounds contained in them. Turmeric leaf extract is known to contain active
antimicrobial compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, phenols and tannins. The
aim of this research was to determine the inhibitory power of turmeric leaf extract
against Porphyromonas ginigivalis. The type of research carried out was a
laboratory experiment with a post-test only control group design. The test was
carried out five times for each treatment, namely turmeric leaf extract at
concentrations of 10%, 15% and 20%, 0.2% chlorhexidine as a positive control and
DMSO as a negative control. The effectiveness test was carried out using the Kirby-
Bauer disc diffusion method. The results of the one-way ANOVA analysis obtained
a p-value of 0.00 for inhibitory power, indicating that turmeric leaf extract can
inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas ginigivalis. The average diameter of the
inhibition zone was found to be 12.80 mm at a concentration of 10%, 14.85 mm at
a concentration of 15% and 17.75 mm at a concentration of 20%. So, it can be
concluded from the results of this study that turmeric leaf extract can inhibit the
growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria.
