Description of Toothbrushing Behavior and Gingival Status in Patients at RSGM USU
Abstract
Dental and oral health is one of the public health problems that requires comprehensive follow-up
because the impact is very broad so it needs to be paid attention to immediately before it is too
late, tooth brushing behavior is the most important thing. Knowledge about gingival health can
influence and improve toothbrushing behavior. This study aims to determine the description and
categories of tooth brushing behavior and categories of gingival health status in patients at the
Dental and Oral Hospital, University of North Sumatra (RSGM USU). This type of research is
descriptive with a cross sectional design. The sample criteria for this study were USU RSGM
patients who had received treatment and were willing to become respondents. Data collection was
carried out using a questionnaire. The research results were processed using SPSS and tested using
descriptive tests. The results showed that 44 people (41.5%) had good tooth brushing behavior, 58
people (54.7%) had adequate tooth brushing behavior and 4 people (3.8%) had poor tooth brushing
behavior. It can also be seen that the gingival index category from the research results was that 58
people (54.7%) had mild gingivitis and 48 people (45.3%) had moderate gingivitis. From the
results it was observed that the majority of patients who visited RSGM USU had sufficient tooth
brushing behavior in the gingival index category which was still light.
