dc.description.abstractThe release of nickel ions in orthodontic brackets can cause hypersensitivity reactions. The gold standard mouthwash is chlorhexidine, but it has the side effect of disrupting the balance of normal flora in the oral cavity. So another alternative is needed, namely herbal mouthwash. One herbal mouthwash is activated charcoal from palm oil shells. Activated charcoal suspension has antibacterial properties which can reduce the number of bacterial colonies, so that plaque accumulation is reduced and saliva pH can increase. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in the average release of nickel ions in stainless steel orthodontic brackets after immersing activated charcoal suspension from palm oil shells for 7 and 14 days using ICP-OES. This research is a laboratory experimental research. The research samples were 30 samples of Ormco brand mini diamond type stainless steel orthodontic brackets for premolars and divided into 6 groups. Based on research, it can be concluded that the average release of nickel ions respectively after soaking in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0,2%, and 12% activated charcoal suspension from palm oil shells for 7 days is (0,0027±0,0003; 0,0149±0,0013; 0,0017±0,0002) ppm and for 14 days (0,0034±0,0019; 0,0179±0,0073; 0,0017±0,0004) ppm; and there is a difference in the average amount of nickel ion released from Ormco brand stainless steel premolar orthodontic brackets after soaking for 7 days and 14 days.en_US
