Enterococcus faecalis is one of the infectious agents that can be found in the root canals of primary teeth that have endodontic infections and are resistant to root canal irrigation materials, which can cause root canal treatment failure. Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) is a spice plant that is reported to have antibacterial bioactive compounds. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) against Enterococcus faecalis. This type of research includes laboratory experimental research with a post test only research design with controlled group design. The samples used were Enterococcus faecalis ATCC® 29212TM and 70% ethanol extract of torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) with 8 concentration groups and 2 control groups. The method used Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and streaking method from MIC testing to determine the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC). Data analysis of the results of the study to determine the value of MIC and MBC using One-Way ANOVA parametric test (p<0.05) and continued with the Post Hoc Test (LSD). The results showed there was antibacterial activity of torch ginger extract (Etlingera elatior) against the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. Torch ginger extract (Etlingera elatior) is able to inhibit the growth of Enterococcus faecalis starting from a concentration of 3.125% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 9.63 ± 0.25 mm and a killing power of 47.77% to a concentration of 80% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 15.03 ± 0.21 mm and a killing power of 98.02%. This study concluded that the concentration of 3.125% was determined as the MIC. The MBC value among the test concentrations was at 80%. The effective concentration of torch ginger extract (Etlingera elatior), which possesses inhibitory and bactericidal properties, thus having the potential to be used as a root canal irrigant, is 80%.en_US
