Immunohistochemical Expression of CD133 as a Cancer Stem Cell Marker in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Based on Clinicopathology at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan
Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a malignant neoplasm that is often
found in the oral cavity. Most patients come to the dentist's practice with advanced
cancer so that OSCC treatment is unsatisfactory. Apart from that, the presence of
cancer stem cells is also a factor that needs to be considered. Cancer stem cells can be
identified by conducting an immunohistochemical examination for CD133 antibodies.
The aim of the study was to determine the expression of CD133, and the correlation to
OSCC patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan in 2019-2023 to age,
gender, tumour location (clinical data) and histopathological sub-type/grading. The
research method is descriptive analytical with a cross-sectional approach on 35 paraffin
block samples diagnosed as OSCC obtained from H. Adam Malik General Hospital
Medan in 2019-2023, and CD133 (HL1271, GeneTex, USA) immunohistochemical
examination was done in the Pathology Anatomy Laboratory Medical Faculty of USU.
Microscopically viewed under an Olympus CX21 light microscope. The results showed
that CD133 appeared positive in 25 cases (71.4%) of the total 35 cases of OSCC. The
Chi Square test showed a significant relationship between CD133 expression and the
histopathological grading of OSCC. The conclusion of this study shows the role of the
CD133 marker as a marker for cancer stem cells in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
