The use of orthodontic wires in the oral cavity always comes into contact with saliva, food and drinks with varying pH which can cause the release of ions. The release of ions in the wire will cause a decrease in the quality of the wire so that the stiffness of the wire also decreases. The aim of this study was to determine the stiffness of stainless steel orthodontic wires after immersion in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0.2%, green betel leaf mouthwash (Piper betle Linn) 1%, 2%, and 3%, for 1, 7, and 14 day. This research is a laboratory experimental research. The sample of this research is stainless steel wire (American Orthodontics®) 0,016 inches with a length of 6 cm as many as 75 sample were immersed in 5 groups of immersing solutions, namely artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0,2%, green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1%, 2%, and 3%. The samples were put into an incubator (37oC) for 1, 7, and 14 days and then tested for stiffness with a Universal Testing Machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/sec. The results of the One-way ANOVA statistical test showed that there was a significant difference between all immersion groups (p<0,05). Post-hoc LSD test results showed significant differences between all pairs of immersion groups for 1, 7, and 14 days (p<0.05). This study concluded that there were differences in the stiffness of stainless steel orthodontic wires after immersion in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0,2%, green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1%, 2%, and 3% for 1, 7, and 14 days.en_US
