Thermoplastic nylon was first introduced in dentistry since 1950s as a flexible
denture base. Thermoplasstic nylon has the disadvantage that it tends to absorb water
which will increase the surface roughness of the denture base so that it is likely to cause
increased microbial contamination. Thus, denture cleaning becomes very important to
prevent infection due to microbial contamination such as Candida albicans. Denture
cleanser that is widely available today is alkaline peroxide (Polident) but have the side
effect of affecting the natural properties of the denture base, such as surface roughness
and color stability. Therefore, natural denture cleaning agents have been widely
researched at this time as an alternative to denture cleaning agents. Aloe vera extract
is one of the traditional medicinal plants that contains antiseptic and antifungal
compounds to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi so that it can be used as a denture
cleaning agent. This study aims to determine the effect of immersion time denture base
thermoplastic nylon in 75% Aloe vera extract for 15 minutes, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8
hours and alkaline peroxide for 15 minutes on the number of Candida albicans. The
design of this study is experimental laboratoris. The sample used was disc-shaped
thermoplastic nylon with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The total
samples of this study were 24 samples which were divided into 6 groups and each group
has 4 samples consisting of the alkaline peroxide group for 15 minutes (positive
control), distilled water for 8 hours (negative control), and 75% Aloe vera extract for
15 minutes, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours. The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis
test with a value p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). This showed that there was a significant effect
of the immersion time denture base thermoplastic nylon in 75% Aloe vera extract for
15 minutes, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours and alkaline peroxide for 15 minutes on the number of Candida albicans. The results of the Mann-Whitney test obtained a value p
<0.05 that showed there was a significant difference in the effect of immersion time
denture base thermoplastic nylon in 75% Aloe vera extract for 15 minutes, 4 hours, 6
hours, and 8 hours and alkaline peroxide for 15 minutes on the number of Candida
albicans. In this study it can be concluded that immersion denture base thermoplastic
nylon in 75% Aloe vera extract for 8 hours has a significant effect compared to other
Aloe vera extract groups so that it can be used as an alternative denture cleanser for
thermoplastic nylon dentures because it can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans
however, it has not been able to provide the same effectiveness as alkaline peroxide
(Polident) in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. However, immersion the
denture in 75% Aloe vera extract for 8 hours can be used as an alternative cleaning
agent for denture base thermoplastic nylon but further research is needed to determine
its impact on the physical and mechanical of the denture.
