Fixed orthodontic treatment involves orthodontic appliance fixation to the teeth
so that it is always in contact with the oral cavity. The condition of the oral cavity is
always changing due to internal and external factors, including when gargling. This
condition is an ideal environment for corrosion and causes pores in orthodontic wires.
Red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum) has a corrosion inhibitor effect so it is hoped
that it can be used as an alternative mouthwash. The purpose of this study was to
determine the rate of corrosion and surface roughness of nickel titanium orthodontic
wire after immersion in artificial saliva, 0,2% chlorhexidine, red betel leaf (Piper
crocatum) mouthwash concentration 1% and 3% for 7, 14, and 21 days. This type of
research is a laboratory experimental study. The sample was nickel titanium
orthodontic wire with a diameter of 0.016 with a length of 5 cm wich were divided into
12 soaking groups, which is artificial saliva, 0,2% chlorhexidine, 1% red betel leaf
mouthwash, and 3% red betel leaf mouthwash, each of it was soaked for 7, 14, and 21
days. Corrosion rate measurements were calculated using the weight loss method and
surface roughness measurements were performed with a profilometer. The results of
research showed that the highest average corrosion rate and surface roughness was in
the 0,2% chlorhexidine group and the lowest average is in the artificial saliva group.
The conclusion of this research is 3% red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) mouthwash was
superior as a substitute for 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash in reducing the rate of
corrosion and surface roughness of nickel titanium orthodontic wires.
