Xerostomia is a subjective sensation of dry mouth that in some cases is characterized with or without a decrease in the flow rate of saliva. Xerostomia can be caused by antihypertensive drugs because the mechanism of action of antihypertensive drugs can affect the flow of saliva directly and indirectly. Decreased function of the salivary glands can change the microbiota of the oral cavity and increase the risk of oral cavity infections caused by Candida species. This research aims to determine the relationship between xerostomia and Candida counts in antihypertensive drug users in the Internal Disease Kidney-Hypertension subspecialist Polyclinic RSUP. H. Adam Malik Medan. This research used an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected with the purposive sampling technique so that 70 outpatient patients using antihypertensive drugs were obtained. This study began with subject selection based on inclusion criteria in the form of patients who take antihypertensive drugs and are willing to sign informed consent, then conducted direct interviews with subjects to obtain xerostomia data through the Indonesian version (SXI-ID) of Summated Xerostomia Inventory questionnaire, then saliva was collected with the spitting technique and then taken to the FMIPA Laboratory to count the number of Candida colonies. The results of this study showed xerostomia sufferers in patients using antihypertensive drugs by 31,4%, and patients with the number of Candidal colonies ≥400 cfu/ml in users of antihypertensive drugs by 22,9%. The results of the chi square test for the relationship between xerostomia and Candida counts in antihypertensive drug users showed a value of p = 0.015 (p < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a meaningful relationship between xerostomia and Candida counts in patients using antihypertensive drugs at the Internal Disease Kidney-Hypertension subspecialist Polyclinic RSUP.
