Tooth extraction is a common procedure in dentistry. After tooth extraction, a socket wound will appear which involves the tissue around the tooth, resulting in a wound healing process. Optimal and fast wound healing is necessary for patient comfort and certain special conditions. Fish oil is a source of omega-3 which is an unsaturated fatty acid that is essential for the body and has antiinflammatory potential. Fish oil is often obtained from pelagic fish, one of which is long jawed mackerel (Rastrelliger sp) which has high nutritional value, especially omega-3. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of long jawed mackerel (Rastrelliger sp) fish oil emulgel on the number of osteoclast cells in socket healing after tooth extraction in Wistar rats. This type of research is true experimental with a post-test only control group design. This research sample used 24 male Wistar rats which were divided into three groups, namely negative control (without treatment), long jawed mackerel fish oil emulgel, and positive control (Gengigel). Counting the number of osteoclast cells and clinical measurements of socket wound volume were carried out on the 7th and 14th days. Based on data analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD tests, it was discovered that there were significant differences in the mean number of osteoclast cells and socket volume between the long jawed mackerel fish oil emulgel group and the untreated group. This showed that long jawed mackerel fish oil emulgel has an effect on the number of osteoclast cells in socket healing after tooth extraction.en_US
