Stainless steel is one of the most commonly used wire types in orthodontic
treatment. During orthodontic treatment, stainless steel are at risk of corrosion, which
can cause allergic reactions. The corrosion process of stainless steel can be caused by
mouthwash. Red betel leaf mouthwash can be used as an alternative herbal mouthwash
to replace commercial mouthwashes that have a high alcohol content. The purpose of
this study was to determine the amount of chromium ion release in stainless steel
orthodontic wires after soaking in artificial saliva, 0,2% chlorhexidine mouthwash, and
1% and 3% concentration red betel leaf mouthwash for 7, 14, and 21 days. This type
of research is laboratory experimental. The research sample were stainless steel
orthodontic wires divided into 12 soaking groups, namely artificial saliva, 0,2%
chlorhexidine mouthwash, and 1% and 3% concentration red betel leaf mouthwash
which were soaked for 7, 14, and 21 days respectively and stored in an incubator at
37oC. The amount of chromium ion release was measured with an ICP-OES device.
The highest amount of chromium ion release occurred in the chlorhexidine group on
days 7, 14, and 21, namely 0,026+0,00205 mg/l, 0,022+0,00232 mg/l, and
0,021+0,00145 mg/l. The lowest amount of chromium ion release occured in the
artificial saliva group on days 7, 14, and 21, namely 0,010+0,00016 mg/l,
0,009+0,00030 mg/l, and 0,008+0,00023 mg/l. The results of this study showed a
significant difference in the mean amount of chromium ions, except in the 3%
concentration red betel leaf mouthwash group on days 14 and 21.
