Oral cavity conditions, such as temperature, quantity and pH of saliva, food and drink can cause the release of metal ions and corrosion which causes changes in the characteristics of the orthodontic wire, such as an increases the surface roughness of the wire. The purpose of this study was to determine the value and changes in surface roughness of orthodontic wires after immersion in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0.2%, green betel leaf mouthwash (Piper betle Linn) 1%, 2%, and 3% for 1, 7, and 14 days. This research is a laboratory experimental research. The samples for this study were 75 stainless steel orthodontic wires (American Orthodontics®) with a diameter of 0.016 inches and a length of 6 cm which were immersed in 5 treatment groups, namely artificial saliva, 0.2% chlorhexidine, green betel leaf mouthwash (Piper betle Linn ) 1%, 2%, and 3%. The samples were placed in an incubator (37℃) for 1, 7, and 14 days, then test for surface roughness with a Mitutoyo SJ-210 Surface Roughness Tester and wire surface morphology analysis with a Scanning Electron Microscope. The results of the One way ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis statistical test showed that there were significant differences between all immersion groups (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there is a large difference in changes in surface roughness on stainless steel orthodontic wires after immersion in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0.2%, green betel leaf mouthwash (Piper betle Linn) 1%, 2%, and 3% for 1, 7 , and 14 days.en_US
