Smoking is the activity of smoking cigarettes. Smoking is a habit that can affect health. Cigarettes contain chemicals such as nicotine and tar, these two chemicals stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanosomes on the gingiva and become gingival pigmentation. E-cigarettes are very popular because they are considered a safer substitute for tobacco cigarettes because there is no burning of tobacco. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in gingival pigmentation scores using the melanin index in USU Faculty of Civil Engineering students who smoke conventional, electric and a combination (conventional and electric). The sampling technique in this study used was purposive sampling technique. The number of samples obtained in this study were 104 people. The analysis test used was the Chi-Square Test. The results of the analysis showed that conventional smoking had a greater incidence of gingival pigmentation in score 3 by 26.9%. The results of the analysis showed that there was a difference in the score of gingival melanin pigmentation between groups who smoked conventional, electric and combination (p=0.0001), it can be concluded that conventional cigarettes have a greater risk of gingival pigmentation than e-cigarettes and combination cigarettes.en_US
