Tensile Adhesion Strength of Glass Ionomer Cement with the Addition of 2, 5, 8%Weight of Nano-hydroxyapatite from Tilapia Scales Calcined at 1000oC Against Tooth enamel
Abstract
Glass ionomer cement has low mechanical properties. The addition of nano-hydroxyapatite can improve the the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement. Tilapia can be synthesized to obtain nano-hydroxyapaitite. This study aimed to determine the difference in the tensile strength of glass ionomer cement to tooth enamel after the addition of 2, 5, 8% by weight of nano-hydroxyapatite tilapia scales. Nano-hydroxyapatite (179 nm) is obtained from tilapia scales through calcination process with a temperature of 1000oC and size reduction using a ball-mill. A total of 40 samples were divided into 4 groups, namely the group without the addition of nano-hydroxyapatite and the addition of 2, 5, 8% by weight of nano-hydroxyapatite. Samples (glass ionomer cement + nano-hydroxyapatite) in the form of tablets 4mm in diameter and 2 mm thick were applied to the buccal surface of premolars after being implanted in acrylic resin. The enamel surface is discarded 0.005 mm, smeared with dentin-conditioner for 20 seconds, and placed on top of the cast master. The ratio of powder:nano-hydroxyapatite:liquid of each group is 0.170:0.00g:0.05g; 0.167:0.003g:0.05g; 0.162:0.008g:0.05g; 0.157:0.013g:0.05g. After stirring, the material is fed into a mould 4mm in diameter and 2 mm in height placed on the tooth surface. The mould is covered with celluloid-strip and glass-slide. Then, a load of 1 kg was placed until hardened for 2 minutes 20 seconds and immersed in aquades for 24 hours before testing tensile strength using universal-testing-machine. The average yield of tensile adhesion strength in groups 1, 2, 3, 4 was 5.72 ± 0.178MPa; 6.59 ± 0.189MPa; 7.54 ± 0.203MPa; 8.30 ± 0.290MPa. The results of the One-way-Anova test showed a significant difference in tensile strength between groups (p<0.05). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the tensile strength of glass ionomer cement to tooth enamel after the addition of 2, 5, and 8% by weight of tilapia scale nano-hydroxyapatite. The tensile strength value of glass ionomer cement increases with increasing concentration of nano-hydroxyapatite.
