dc.description.abstract | Background: Sick children who are hospitalized are at risk of losing weight, causing malnutrition during the treatment period. The prevalence of hospital malnutrition in various countries is quite high. Hospital malnutrition can affect the prognosis and course of the disease by increasing the incidence of infection, slowing wound healing, reducing the body's immunity, affecting the action of drugs, prolonging the length of treatment, and increasing morbidity and mortality rates. The length of stay spent in hospital can be both a cause and an impact of malnutrition. Length of stay in hospital is one of the main risk factors for malnutrition in hospital.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between length of stay and the incidence of hospital malnutrition at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan.
Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out at Rindu B4 RSUP. H. Adam Malik Medan in March - April 2023. The samples were all sick children aged 1 month to 18 years who were being treated in inpatient rooms selected using consecutive sampling. Multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression methods was carried out to analyze the relationship between length of stay and the incidence of hospital malnutrition. A value p<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Of the 55 samples of children who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the average length of stay for child subjects was 7 days. The prevalence of hospital malnutrition in children was 29.1%. Length of stay has a significant relationship with hospital malnutrition in children (p = 0.008) with an RR value of 5.6 (95% CI = 1.578 – 19.87).
Conclusion: The prevalence of hospital malnutrition at RSUP H. Adam Malik Medan has decreased compared to previous research. There is a significant relationship between length of stay and hospital malnutrition | en_US |
