    Abstract
Stainless steel orthodontic wire is one type of wire that is often used in orthodontic treatment. The use of mouthwash during orthodontic treatment is one of the factors releasing ferum (Fe) ions from orthodontic wire. Green betel leaves (Piper betle Linn) contains antioxidants that can inhibit the corrosion process in orthodontic wire. The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of ferum (Fe) ions release on orthodontic wire stainless steel after immersion in green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1%, 2%, and 3%, chlorhexidine mouthwash 0,2%, and artificial saliva for 1, 7, and 14 days. This study is a laboratory experimental research. The samples were American Orthodontics® brand orthodontic wire stainless steel with diameter of 0.016 inches and length of 6 cm, 45 pieces immersed in 5 groups of immersion solutions, namely green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1%, 2%, and 3%, chlorhexidine mouthwash 0,2%, and artificial saliva. The samples were placed in an incubator (37°C) for 1, 7, and 14 days, then tested for ferum (Fe) ion release by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Mean and standard deviation release of ferum (Fe) ions orthodontic wire stainless steel after immersion in green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1% for 1, 7, and 14 days is 0.146±0.029 mg/L, 0.216±0.015 mg/L, and 0.256±0.003 mg/L, green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 2% for 1, 7, and 14 days is 0.133±0.012 mg/L, 0.202±0.005 mg/L, and 0.247±0.017 mg/L, green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 3% for 1, 7, and 14 days were 0.039±0.024 mg/L, 0.177±0.014 mg/L, and 0.246±0.002 mg/L, chlorhexidine mouthwash 0,2% for 1, 7, and 14 days is 0.175±0.035 mg/L, 0.306±0.021 mg/L, and 0.352±0.036 mg/L, artificial saliva for 1, 7, and 14 days is 0.004±0.001 mg /L, 0.054±0.007 mg/L, and 0.150±0.027 mg/L. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis statistical test showed that there was a significant difference between all immersion solution and time (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there are differences in the release of ferum (Fe) ions in orthodontic wire stainlesss steel after immersion in green betel leaf (Piper betle Linn) mouthwash 1%, 2%, and 3%, chlorhexidine mouthwash 0,2%, and artificial saliva for 1, 7, and 14 days.
