Perbedaan Tingkat Pengetahuan Perokok dan Non Perokok Mengenai Dampak Merokok terhadap Rongga Mulut di Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut Universitas Sumatera Utara

Abstract

Smoking is a very common habit in society. A Low knowledge about the impact of smoking on the oral cavity is one of the reasons behind the smoking habit. This causes the prevalence of smoking was continued to increase. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on the oral cavity at the Dental Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara. This study was an analytical survey approach cross-sectional. This study involved 99 smokers and 99 non smokers who were obtained based on purposive sampling with inclusion criteria, namely visitors to the Dental Hospital USU who smoke or do not smoke, aged 15 years and over, and willing to become research respondents, as well as exclusion criteria, namely visitors who are uncooperative in answering questionnaire questions. Data was obtained through interviews using a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using Chi-Square statistical tests. The results of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on the oral cavity and oral soft tissue, p=0.0001 (p<0.05). There is no significant difference between the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on the hard tissue of the oral cavity, p=0.077 (p>0.05). There is a significant difference between the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on symptoms that occur in the oral cavity, p=0.0001 (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study was there is a significant difference between the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on the oral cavity, oral soft tissue and symptoms that occur in the oral cavity, but there is no significant difference between the level of knowledge of smokers and non smokers on impact of smoking on hard tissue of the oral cavity.
