Simbol dan Ornamen Vihara Setia Budi di Kota Medan: Kajian Semiotik 棉兰市关帝庙的标志和装饰：符号学研究 Mián lán shì guān dì miào de biāozhì hé zhuāngshì:Fúhào xué yánjiū

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the types of ornamental symbols found in the Setia Budi Monastery building in Medan City and describe the function of the meaning of ornamental symbols found in the Setia Budi Monastery building in Medan City. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by recording, analyzing, and interpreting the function of the meaning of ornamental symbols contained in the Setia Budi Monastery building in Medan City.The theory used in this research is Bronislaw's Functionalism theory and Charles Sanders Pierce's Semiotic theory. Based on data analysis, the results obtained by the symbol function contained in the Setia Budi Monastery building are classified into four parts, namely:1) Symbol of worship tools: function as a complementary tool for Buddhists to carry out worship 2) Symbols of animals and plants: function as a symbol of the beauty of the temple building 3) Symbols of Gods and Goddesses: function as a medium of spiritual communication between humans and the ruler of the universe4) General symbol: function as beauty. Then analyze the function of ornamental symbols and make conclusions on the function and meaning of ornamental symbols found in the Setia Budi Monastery building in Medan City.
