The Relationship Between Parenting Pattern and Maternal Characteristic with Nutritional Status of Toddlers in Padang Bulan Sub District Medan Baru District Medan City
Abstract
Nutritional status is a condition caused by the balance between the intake of nutrients from food and the needs of nutrients needed to metabolize the body (Ministry of Health, 2017). Toddlers are children aged 12 months to 59 months. Nutritional status of toddlers is influenced by parenting, which consists of feeding practices, personal hygiene practices and environmental sanitation, and health care. Nutritional status of toddlers is also influenced by maternal characteristics consisting of maternal age, maternal education, maternal employment, maternal nutritional knowledge and number of children. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parenting patterns and maternal characteristics with the nutritional status of toddlers in Padang Bulan Sub district, Medan Baru District, Medan City. This type of research is analytic research with a cross sectional design. The population in this study totaled 239 toddlers. The sample number amounted to 69 toddlers with simple random sampling technique. Data collection methods were carried out by interview using a questionnaire. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test which the results were described in a frequency distribution table. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between parenting, feeding practices, personal hygiene practices and environmental sanitation, health care, and maternal nutritional knowledge with the nutritional status of toddlers and there was no significant relationship between maternal age, maternal education, maternal employment and number of children with the nutritional status of toddlers in Padang Bulan Sub-district, Medan Baru District, Medan City. Based on the results of the study, it is expected that the Medan City Health Office can increase activities regarding parenting to mothers who have toddlers, to the Padang Bulan Health Center to further improve counseling and education about the importance of good parenting, and to mothers who have toddlers to further improve knowledge about nutrition and take better care of toddlers to improve the nutritional status of toddlers.
