Analisis Perilaku Pengelolaan Limbah Elektronik dengan Prinsip 3R (Reduce, Reuse, dan Recycle) pada Mahasiswa Universitas Sumatera Utara Tahun 2023

Abstract

Increasing electronic waste is caused by increasing electronic product consumption every year. The increase in electronic products is in line with COVID-19 and the Industrial Revolution 5.0 era. In 2020, each person produces 76 kg/year of electronic waste. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in 2021, only 17,4% of electronic waste in Indonesia is appropriately managed. Electronic waste is dangerous for health and the environment. It needs proper management to minimize the risk. According to PP Number 27 of 2020, electronic waste management is divided into reduction and handling. This research focuses on reduction method, namely, reduce, reuse, and recycle. The type of research used is a descriptive survey using a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. The population in this study were undergraduate students at the Universitas Sumatera Utara class of 2020 and 2021 from the Science & Technology faculty. The population is 8.298 students, with a total sample of 148 students. The research showed that only 35.1% of students received enough information about the 3R electronic waste. All students have produced electronic waste in the category of information technology & communications equipment. The most common electronic waste items students own are headphones, headsets, and earphones, which is 80.4%. Furthermore, the most electronic waste students manage individually or in groups using the 3R principle is phones, namely 37.8%. The research results found that 85.8% of students had good knowledge, 72.3% had good attitudes, and only 47.3% had good actions towards electronic waste management using the 3R principles. It is recommended that the government, especially the Environmental Service and the Health Service, do massive socialization regarding the 3R principles of electronic waste. The hope is that this can maximize community awareness of managing electronic waste appropriately, especially among students.
