The Relationship between Family Support and Elderly Participation in Elderly Exercise in Paya Bakung Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency
Abstract
Physical activity is a crucial aspect of maintaining the physical and mental healshof the elderly. One popular form of physical activity among the elderly is exercise. However, participation rates in exercise activities among the elderly are often low. This low participation can be attributed to various factors, one of which is the lack of family support. Adequate family support can motivate the elderly to be more active in physical activities such as exercise. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family support and elderly participation in elderly exercise in Paya Bakung Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency. This research employs a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling method used was total sampling, with a total of 60 samples. The instruments used were a family support questionnaire consisting of 16 statements and an attendance list of elderly participants in the exercise sessions. The results indicated that the highest type of family support was emotional support, reported by 28 respondents (47%), and the elderly's activity level was considered active, with 40 respondents (67%). The Chi-Square test results showed a p-value of 0.023, indicating a significant relationship between family support and elderly participation in exercise. This study is expected to help family members of the elderly provide optimal support, as high family support is a key factor in increasing elderly participation in exercise activities
