The Role of Parents and Teachers in Providing Sex Education to Elementary School Children in Tanjung Rejo Village
Abstract
Parents and teachers have a role in providing sex education to children. Considering the increasing number of cases of sexual violence against children, sex education should be taught from an early age. According to Simfoni PPA, during 2023 there were 13,156 cases of sexual abuse in Indonesia and in 2021 there were cases of sexual violence against elementary children in Tanjung Rejo. The research aims to identify the roles and barriers of parents and teacher in providing sex education and to determine childrens’s understanding regarding sex education. The research method used is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The informants consisted of 4 parents, 2 teachers, and 4 elementary school children who were determined using purposive sampling techniques. The research results show that parents and teachers have provided sex education to children. Parents have taught their children about gender differences, how to keep reproductive organs clean, and body parts that should not be touched, while teachers have taught their students about the characteristics of puberty, cleanliness of reproductive organs, body parts that should not be touched, and etiquette in dressing. Children also understand sex education by remembering material provided by parents and teachers. The obstacles felt by parents are difficulty in initiating communication, confusion in choosing the right words, and parent’s busy lives. The obstacles felt by teachers are the lack of cooperation between parents and teachers and limited material in the curriculum. It is hoped that parents can play a more active role in providing sex education without having to wait for their children to ask first, for teachers to be able to provide parenting education regarding sex education for children, and for the children to be able to make parents and teachers as a sources of information regarding sexual information
