    Abstract
Central Market Medan is one of the districts that hold architectural and important historical values regarding the structure and morphology of the city, especially in Medan City. The District of Central Market Medan was built in 1929 by the Dutch East Indies government and consists of 183 shops. The distrcit plays an important role as a generator of significant commercial activities and was declared as the largest market area in Medan during its time. As a commercial area, corner buildings have a pivotal role in optimizing the function of the building. Corner buildings are built with distinctive characteristics compared to the surrounding buildings which could impact the urban space. Especially the corner buildings in the District of Central Market Medan, which in its planning is inseparable from the influence of the Dutch East Indies in terms of architecture and the structure of urban space. Research on the typology of corner buildings in the District of Central Market Medan was conducted to find the relevance of corner building typology theory to corner buildings in the District of Central Market Medan and its influence on urban space. The research was conducted using qualitative methodology by conducting observation, literature study, and figure- ground analysis. The results of the research show that the corner buildings in the District of Central Market Medan are dominated by the typology of external corner with simple angular corner types and have an impact in shaping the characteristics of commercial areas with the architectural characteristics of Nieuwe Bouwen that features a grid city structure as a representation of urban planning inherited from the Dutch East Indies leadership.
