    Abstract
Hypertension is an increase in blood pressure in the arteries with a systolic blood pressure of more than 140 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure of more than 90 mmHg in two measurements with an interval of 1-2 minutes. Based on the results of the Basic Health Research report 2018 the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is 34.11 percent, prevalence of hypertension in North Sumatra is 29.19 percent, and prevalence of hypertension in Karo Regency is 45,49 percent. The bivariate results showed that there was a significant relationship between age (p<0.05), latest education (p<0.05), diet (p<0.05), and smoking (p<0.05) with hypertension. However, there was no significant relationship between gender (p>0.05), income (p>0.05), and alcohol consumption (p>0.05) with the incidence of hypertension.
