Backgrounds : The distal supracondylar region is the most common site of fractures around the elbow
in children. Malunion occurs when a broken bone heals in an abnormal position, potentially causing
dysfunction of the bone or limb. Currently, the use of scoring systems is a standard part of evaluating
treatment outcomes. However, proper validation studies are rare, and outcome measurement tools may
not always be used for the population of interest. The Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) is a
practical tool often used, combining subjective (pain) and objective assessment of elbow conditions.
Moreover, MEPS has been used in the paediatric age group.
Methods : The study is an analytical study with a quasi-experimental design, using a pre-test
- post-test one-group-only design. The sample size for this study was 10 patients, selected using
non-probability sampling with a consecutive sampling. Data analysis in this study includes
univariate and bivariate analysis. After the necessary data was collected, the data was analysed
using SPSS software.
Results : In this study, the average age was 10 ± 2.76 (mean ± SD). The left arm was most
commonly affected, with 9 individuals (90%). The average age is around six years, with a
higher incidence between five and eight years. This study found a significant relationship in
the increase of MEPS scores (p value = 0.009) and the degree of Carrying Angle (p value =
<0.001) towards the normal range in patients with SCH before (pre-op) and after (post-op)
open reduction and internal fixation. This study found a significant relationship in the
decrease of Bauman's Angle (p value = 0.002) towards the normal range and the Anterior
Humeral Line (p value = 0.016) in patients with supracondylar humerus fractures before (preop)
and after (post-op) open reduction and internal fixation.
Conclusion : This study found significant differences in clinical outcomes, namely the increase in
MEPS scores and radiological outcomes, and findings of the Anterior Humeral Line towards the normal
range in patients with supracondylar humerus fractures before (pre-op) and after (post-op) open
reduction and internal fixation.
