Background: D-dimer is a fibrin degradation product that can be used as a
parameter of coagulopathy in Covid-19 patients and is associated with the
incidence of ARDS, the need for ICU care and death.
Objective: To determine the relationship between D-dimer values and mortality
in children with Covid-19 in Medan City Hospitals, North Sumatera.
Methods: Observational analytical study with a retrospective cohort design of
children confirmed for Covid-19 based on PCR who were treated in the isolation
ward at H. Adam Malik Hospital, Bunda Thamrin Hospital and Murni Teguh
Hospital, Medan. The relationship between D-dimer values and mortality was
seen in children aged 0-18 years and analyzed using the Fischers Exact Test.
Results: From a multivariate analysis with 155 subjects, it was found that the Ddimer
value had no correlation with mortality (p=0,006) but it was found that
shortness of breath was at risk of death 36 times greater than children who did not
have shortness of breath.
Conclution: The D-dimer value has no relationship with mortality in children
with confirmed Covid-19.
