The Medan and Deli Serdang areas are areas potentially prone to lightning
due to the growth of convective clouds. Lightning analysis methods, spatial and
temporal analysis and correlation tests were used to obtain Cloud to Ground (CG)
lightning characteristics in Medan and Deli Serdang. CG lightning data, heavy
rainfall and geospatial data (soil type, elevation and land cover) for the 2019-2022
period were used. The research results show that the most CG lightning events will
occur in 2022 with the highest accumulation of monthly lightning events in May with
365,807 lightning strikes. This condition is related to the peak of the rainy and dry
seasons in Medan and Deli Serdang. The correlation between heavy rainfall and CG
lightning in the Medan and Deli Serdang areas is r = 0,566 for CG-, r = 0,567 for
CG+ and r = 0,576 for total CG. Lightning occurs most often in areas with Ortic
Ferralsols soil types which contain metallic substances, such as zinc and aluminum.
The correlation value between CG lightning and elevation and land cover varies
greatly. This is because lightning activity in an area depends on several other
supporting parameters.
