Background: Toxic optic neuropathy is a visual disorder due to damage to the optic nerve that occurs after exposure to toxic substances. Various types of toxic substances can cause toxic optic neuropathy such as methanol. Methanol intoxication is a concern because its toxic effects result in damage to the optic nerve, characterized by a sharp decrease in vision and even blindness. Disorders of the optic nerve caused by methanol are grouped as methanol toxic optic neuropathy (NOTM). Objective: To analyze the effect of administering red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) on retinal ganglion cell density in mice with a model of methanol-induced toxic optic neuropathy. Materials and Methods: This type of research is animal experimental research with a research design in the form of a randomized post test only control group laboratory experimental design. Sample selection and grouping were carried out using a simple random sampling method, every 36 samples that met the criteria would be given a number, then taken randomly by the researcher and divided into 6 groups of equal size. Results: The highest number of ganglion cells was found in mice given EJM 500 mg/kg with a mean of 38.17 (SD=4.02). The results of the Kruskal Wallis test were p=0.002, indicating that there was a significant difference in the number of ganglion cells in the right eye based on the treatment group. In the left eye, the mean was 38.17 (SD=4.02), with a p value=0.002, indicating that there was a significant difference in the number of ganglion cells in the left eye based on the treatment group. Conclusion: So it can be concluded that red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) has a neuroprotective effect to prevent damage to eye ganglion cells due to methanol.en_US
