A Description of Slang Words Used in Harry Potter Film: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
Abstract
This paper describes the types and functions of slang words used in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). This paper aims to determine the types and functions of slang words found in the film. The types and functions of slang words can be found by analyzing the words spoken by the characters in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). The method used by the writer is a descriptive qualitative method. In this paper, the writer uses Allan and Burridge's (2006) theory to identify and classify the types and functions of slang words. The data analysis technique is done by watching and identifying the dialog from the film. According to Allan and Burridge (2006), there are 5 types of slang words namely, Fresh and Creative (4 words), Flippant (3 words), Imitative (1 word), Acronym (1 word), and Clipping (1 word). The fresh and creative type is the most dominant type of slang words used in the film. And there are 7 functions of slang words namely, to address (2 words), to humiliate (1 word), to initiate relax conversation (1 word), to form intimate atmosphere (1 word), to express impression (2 words), to reveal anger (1 word), and to show intimacy (2 words). Based on the findings of this paper, there are 10 data slang words related to the types and functions of slang words used in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001).
