dc.description.abstractThis research is entitled "Self-Disclosure in Interpersonal Communication Among New Students in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra." The purpose of this study is to investigate self-disclosure in interpersonal communication among new students in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra and to identify the inhibiting and supporting factors for self-disclosure in interpersonal communication among these new students in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra. The theories employed in this research are self-disclosure and interpersonal communication,. The research methodology used is qualitative. The primary informants are four new students in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra, and the triangulation include best friend, boyfriend, siblings and parent of new student in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra. Data for the research are collected through interviews. Data validity is ensured through triangulation techniques. The results of this research indicate that self-disclosure in interpersonal communication among new students in the Communication Science Program at the University of North Sumatra is frequently observed, with shared information typically general things. around secrets, feelings, and current issues, often disclosed to close friends or parents, each with its own specific purpose. In the process of self-disclosure, inhibiting factors include a lack of trust in others, difficulty expressing oneself, limited social relations, ineptitude in initiating conversation topics, fear of non-responsive reactions, closed personalities, lack of self-confidence, selective sharing locations, and low self-esteem. Supporting factors, on the other hand, encompass trust, close relationships, positive responses, self-confidence, long-lasting relationships, timeliness, situational appropriateness, friendly and approachable personalities, openness, and good friendship relations.en_US
