Background
One of the common manifestations of extra pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is spinal tuberculosis otherwise known as spondylitis TB which contributes to more than 50% of all musculoskeletal TB. The involvement of the pedicle in Spondylitis TB contributes to the compression of the spinal nerve, collapse of the anterior column, and the degree of severity of the kyphotic deformity. But the implication of the involvement of the pedicle in spondylitis TB is still not well explored and reported. This study aims to see the difference between the degree of kyphotic deformity in Thoracal spondylitis TB with or without involvement of pedicle.
Material and Methods
This research grade the difference in degree of deformity in cases of spondylitis TB which involved and spare the pedicle. Samples that fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria have their data gathered (age, sex) and then are divided into 2 groups which are the infection with and without involvement of the pedicle groups, as seen on MRI. Kyphotic deformity are measured for each sample, and then are analyzed to look for a significant difference between the two groups.
Results
A total of 26 samples are collected from the period of January 2022 until October 2023., 14 male samples and 12 females sample with the average age of 37,35 years (+- 14,95). No significant difference are noted between the involvement of the pedicle with gender (p= 0,22) and age (p=0.73). A total of 14 samples have involvement of the pedicle with mean kyphotic angle of 20,5o (+-14,90) and 12 without the involvement of the pedicle with mean kyphotic angle of 9,08o (+-9,08). A significant difference was found between these two groups with p=0,0002.
Conclusion
Pedicle damage in cases of Spondylitis TB causes a degree of kyphotic deformity that are more severe than those that does not involve the pedicle. There are no significant difference between the general characteristics such as age and sex of patient with spondylitis TB and the involvement of the pedicle.
