Konstruksi Konsep Diri melalui Word of Affirmation pada Mahasiswa Perantau (Studi di Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik Universitas Sumatera Utara)

Abstract

This research is entitled "Construction of Self-Concept through Words of Affirmation in Migrant Students (Study at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra)". This study aims to determine how Word of Affirmation as a form of interpersonal communication in the construction of the self-concept of overseas students while attending lectures at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), University of North Sumatra. The research method used is qualitative with a total of 5 informants who are students of FISIP University of North Sumatra class of 2020. The data validity of this research uses source triangulation from the closest person to the main informant. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants. Interpersonal communication through Word of Affirmation influences the self-concept of overseas students of FISIP Universitas Sumatera Utara effectively on the internal and external dimensions of self-concept. Important aspects of effective interpersonal communication according to Devito are openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality that support the effectiveness of interpersonal communication in interacting with others. The results of this study indicate that overseas students have a positive self-concept because overseas students receive Word of Affirmation from their interpersonal communication in shaping their self-concept. This helps overseas students to feel confident, valued, and motivated to continue to develop.
