Background: Substantial loss of muscle mass in aging and COPD leads to decreased respiratory function and health status, exercise intolerance, death, and increased visits to health facilities. Exercise training and adequate nutrition are cornerstones of comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program in COPD. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of chicken egg white supplementation in stable COPD patients who do physical exercise.
Methods: This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental study design. The subjects were stable COPD patients aged 40-80 years, divided into a control group that did smartphone-guided physical exercise and intervention group that did exercise accompanied by supplementation of chicken egg whites. Physical exercise includes strength training and resistance training. The 6MWT score is assessed and tested by independent t-test.
Results: Based on hypothesis testing, the value of p = 0.000 (p<0,05) was obtained. The mean decrease in 6MWT scores in the control group was 32.42; while in the intervention group it was 145.47.
Conclusion: There is significant difference in 6MWT score improvement between each groups which was higher in the intervention group. Thus, egg white supplementation in patients who do physical exercise can improve the functional capacity of stable COPD patients.
