Life Survival Strategies of Daily Farm Laborers in Meeting Household Needs in Libo Jaya Village, Kandis Sub-District
Abstract
Agricultural workers are people who have a low position with a relatively small income and are only able to meet their needs at a moment's notice. Agricultural workers are required to be able to fulfill their daily needs in various ways to survive. There are various ways that agricultural workers use to fulfill their living needs. Farm workers in Libo Jaya Village, Kandis District are a group of people with a low economy. Farmworkers carry out various strategies to meet family needs despite their weaknesses and limitations. The family needs that must be met are food, clothing, shelter, health and education. The aim of this research is to find out what survival strategies are used by farm workers in Libo Jaya Village to meet family needs. Data collection techniques were carried out by conducting observations, interviews and documentation. In obtaining conclusions, data obtained in the field was processed by analyzing qualitatively with a descriptive approach. The results of this research show that the lives of agricultural laborers in Libo Jaya Village are still poor, this can be seen from the simple living conditions, simple consumption patterns, many children who have dropped out of school due to not having the means. The results of this research also show that in difficult economic conditions, what strategies do farmworker families use to survive? The strategy used by farmworkers to survive is to use active strategies, by exploiting the potential of family members, seeking additional income, increasing working hours, utilizing available natural resources. Passive strategy by minimizing family expenses, saving on simple food menus, rarely buying new clothes. The networking strategy carried out is utilizing networks or building relationships, owing money to neighbors or family, taking advantage of poverty programs provided by the government. The research results show that the most dominant strategy used by the people of Libo Jaya Village is an active strategy.
