Background: Propofol is most used to induce general anesthesia. The most frequent side effect of
propofol is hypotension. It has been demonstrated that ephedrine and phenylephrine can counteract
propofol's hypotensive side effects. However, until now there have not been many studies
comparing which therapy is superior in overcoming such hypotension.
Objective: This study aimed to compare phenylephrine and ephedrine in the prevention of
hypotension during induction of general anesthesia with propofol.
Methods: This study was a clinical trial with a double-blind randomized trial in all patients with
elective surgery plans under general anesthesia at H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan and USU
Hospital Medan conducted in December 2023 until the sample size was met. The study subjects
were randomly divided into 2 groups, which received phenylephrine 100 mcg or ephedrine 5 mg.
Patients were assessed for hemodynamics after premedication and 30 seconds after propofol
induction.
Results: The mean results T1 (30 seconds after propofol induction) subjects who received 100
mcg phenylephrine had mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 103,82±12,36 and
66,75±8,81 mmHg. Subjects who received ephedrine 5 mg had mean systolic and diastolic blood
pressure of 103,02±11,55 and 66,52±8,23 mmHg. The phenylephrine 100 mcg and ephedrine 5 mg
groups had a mean heart rate of 79,02±10,72 and 81,02±16,2.
Conclusion: There is a significant effect of both groups in preventing hypotension in patients
induced general anesthesia with propofol, but there is no difference between the two groups.
