The synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4/SiO2 composite with variations of SiO2
using the coprecipitation method have been successfully carried out. Fe3O4 has a
magnetic ability that can degrade dye waste, while SiO2 has good compatibility to coat
magnetic materials. In this study, five variations of SiO2 addition were used, namely
the addition of 1 g, 1.1 g, 1.2 g, 1.3, 1.4 g. The synthesized Fe3O4/SiO2 composites
were then characterized with Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray
Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) for surface analysis and mapping of sample constituent
elements, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystal phase and lattice structure
parameters, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) to analyze functional groups, and
Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to measure its magnetic properties. The SEMEDX analysis results show a decrease in the average particle size of the sample as
SiO2 increases. The XRD characterization results indicated that the sample
crystallized well, marked by the appearance of diffraction peaks corresponding to
COD Magnetite No. 96-900-6923. The FT-IR test results showed the presence of SiO-Si groups that are characteristic of SiO2 and Fe-O functional groups that represent
the characteristics of Fe3O4. VSM results show a decrease in magnetic saturation,
remanent magnetization, and sample coercivity due to the addition of SiO2. The
coercivity value of the sample obtained is smaller than 200 Oe which indicates the
sample is a soft magnetic material.
