Background: Matoa leaves have function as antibacterial. Nanoparticles of matoa leaves (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst & G.Forst) have antibacterial activity on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Nanoparticles are known to have advantages such as being able toincrease the effect activity of compounds.
Objective: To formulate the nanoparticles of matoa leaves (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst & G.Forst) into capsules and test the activity of capsules against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and evaluate of capsules.
Methods: Dried matoa leaves powder (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst & G.Forst) was made into nanoparticles by top down method using Planetary Ball Mill grinding machine and was then characterized using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Antibacterial activity test using the diffusion method of Kirby Baeuer’s agar against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by measuring the diameter of the bacterial inhibition zone. The dosage of capsule formula used was 150 mg, 200 mh, 250 mg. Evaluation tests of capsules were carried out including: weight uniformity test, disintegration time test.
Results: The results of antibacterial activity of matoa leaves nanoparticles on Escherichia coli inhibited at minimal inhibition diameter in the strong range at a concentration of 150 mg/ml with an inhibition zone diameter of 10.0 ± 0.26 mm and on Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 150 mg/ml with an inhibition zone diameter of 10.23 ± 0.07 mm. Matoa leaves nanoparticles capsules (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst & G.Forst) have demonstrated a strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli with an inhibition zone diameter of 12.61±2.07 mm at a dose of 150 mg, 13.4±2.00 mm at a dose of 200 mg, and 13.4±2.00 mm at a dose of 250 mg and against Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibition diameter of 13,25±0,78 mm at a dose of 150 mg, 13,81±1,10 mm at a dose of 200 mg, and 14,13±1,23 mm at a dose of 250 mg. The results of the weight uniformity test and the disintegration time test meet the evaluation requipments.
Conclusion: nanoparticles of matoa leaves (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst & G.Forst) can be formulated into capsules with dosage form of 150 mg, 200 mg, and 250 mg and has antibacterial activity strongly inhibited Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
