Representation of the Construction of Masculinity on the TikTok Platform
Abstract
The construction of masculinity has a close relationship with the social and cultural situations that determine its existence. Likewise, its dynamic nature adapts to the conditions of time, race and culture in a place. So masculinity is divided into several different classifications. This research will discuss five classifications of masculinity construction. The aim of this research is to provide an overview of how types of masculinity are represented by TikTok content creators. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data collection used is observation, documentation and literature study. The data analysis technique used is critical discourse analysis from Norman Fairclough. These types of masculinity consist of: eyes represented by Zharif Dary, namely a strong and fierce man. Metrosexual is represented by Tysna Saputra, namely a man who takes care of himself and loves urban life. Soft masculinity represented by Fahmi Nasrulloh, namely a man who is feminine but does not lose his masculine image. Lumbersexual is represented by Reza Dwi Yanda, a man who wears a checkered flannel shirt, has a beard and loves nature. Ubersexual is represented by Irwan Prasetiyo, namely a man who prioritizes personal quality. Based on Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity, there are four forms of hegemonic masculinity, namely hegemonic, subordinate, complete and marginal masculinity. This research attempts to find out the most dominant masculinity among the five types of masculinity. Based on the research results, it was found that the type of masculinity eyes as hegemonic masculinity and masculinity give em hell; metrosexual and soft masculinity as subordinate masculinity and masculinity new man as narcissist; lumbersexual as complete masculinity; and ubersexuality as marginal masculinity. The research results also show that of the five types of masculinity, the most dominant is masculinity eyes.
