Musik dalam Ritual Perkawinan Batak Toba: Kajian Etnografi Penggunaan Gondang Sabangunan dan Kontemporer di Tarutung

Abstract

With the title of this study, the author conducted research right in Tarutung, North Tapanuli Regency with the aim of studying and finding out how music and media are used in the traditional Batak Toba wedding party in Tarutung and finding views and social aspects of the practice of its use and existence. This research method uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and participatory observation to obtain data sources from deepth interviews. The informants involved in this study were eight people, including three people who worked as Batak musical instrument players, one person as “Raja Hata” (Traditional Head), one person as a private music teacher, two preachers and one of them was a music player and one teacher as well as a music connoisseur. The conclusion of this study shows that the use of musical instruments in the traditional Batak Toba wedding party in Tarutung using traditional and contemporary instruments and the combination of the two types of musical instruments creates works and expressions that are lively, liked and accepted by the community, as well as becoming new innovations and motivations to expand the existence of musical instruments and at the same time the music produced. The community is more following the changing times and must dare to work and develop skills and knowledge about musical instruments and their use, and not forget the old culture that has become the foundation to experience the new culture now.
