Motivation for independent nursing practice is the drive that arise in a nurse to establish independent nursing practices either individually or in groups outside of healtcare facilities. One of the factors that can influence nurses' motivation to open practice is the nurse’s characteristics. The purposestudy is to determine the relationship between nurse characteristics and their motivation to open independent care practices in Padang Lawas Regencyt. This study uses a descriptive quantitative method with survey approach. The study population comprises 252 professional nurses in Padang Lawas Regency. The sampling technique employed is purposive sampling technique. Data analysis uses the Spearman’s Rank correlation test. The results of test show no relationship between respondent characteristics based on age (p=0.710), a relationship on gender (p=0.027), no relationship between on length of work (p=0.614), there was a relationship based on employment status (p=0.024 ), no relationshipbased on marital status (p=0.774), an a relationship based om income (p=0.035) with the motivation of nurse to open independent nursing practices. The conclusion of this study is that there is no relationship between nurse characteristics (age, length of work, and marital status) and the motivation of nurses to open independent care practices. However, there is a relationship between nurse characteristics (gender, employment status and income) and the motivation of nurse to open independent nursing practices. Nurse organizations are expected to continue to accompany nurses who want to open independent nursing practice
