Determinants of Adolescent Foster Children's Strategy and Empowerment in the Practice of Independence and Skills at SOS Children’s Village Medan
Abstract
Empowering foster adolescents is an important thing to be done by child welfare institutions. Empowerment by training independence and skills is the basis of values that need to be held by institutions for adolescent foster children. Every foster child cannot forever stay in a social institution or orphanage. Through this independence and skills, it is hoped that adolescents will succeed in their future, be able to face working age, and not be dependent on the social services provided. This study aims to find out the determinants of strategies and empowerment of adolescent foster children in the practice of independence and skills in SOS Children's Village Medan. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data collection carried out in this study was in the form of interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results of this study obtained are several determinants of strategy in SOS Children's Village Medan, namely the determinants of strategy in internal factors, including the condition of foster children, worker structures, and facilities. The determining factors of strategy are external factors, including corporate partners, the community environment and sponsors, and the government. The empowerment stages carried out include assessment, alternative program planning, action plan formulation, activity implementation stage, and evaluation. The impacts of the determinants of strategy and empowerment resulted in independence and skills practice activities for foster adolescents consisting of employability skills, sports, arts, and individual development plant (IDP).
