Indonesian Women in Kebaya (Case Study: Kebaya Preservation Efforts by Indonesian Women in Kebaya in the Medan Campus Environment, North Sumatra)
Abstract
This research is titled "Indonesian Women in Kebaya: A Case Study of Kebaya Preservation Efforts by Indonesian Women in Kebaya in the Medan Campus Environment, North Sumatra". The background of this study is that Kebaya, as an Indonesian cultural heritage, holds significant aesthetic value and gender identity for Indonesian women. However, in modern life, the use of kebaya is decreasing, especially among students. This study aims to identify the kebaya preservation efforts carried out by the Indonesian Women in Kebaya (PBI) community in the Medan campus environment, North Sumatra, as well as the challenges faced in these efforts. Method: This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with PBI members and female students at the University of North Sumatra and Pancabudi University. Data analysis was conducted using inductive techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results: The results of the study show that PBI has undertaken various kebaya preservation efforts, including collaboration with campuses, educational programs, collaboration with other communities, provision of kebaya rentals, encouragement to wear kebaya on Tuesdays, and the use of social media as a promotional platform. Challenges faced include a lack of personnel and administration specifically to manage social media, as well as considerations of comfort and accessibility of kebaya for female students. Analysis: The analysis shows that the kebaya preservation program by PBI is well received by female students, but its use in daily life is still limited. Influencing factors include changing trends, limited access, and perceptions of kebaya comfort. Kebaya has strong cultural significance and plays an important role in shaping gender identity and ethnic aesthetics among female students. Discussion: The discussion highlights the importance of the continuity of kebaya preservation programs and better integration into student life. Greater support from campuses and communities is needed to increase students' awareness and interest in kebaya. These efforts are expected to maintain the sustainability of kebaya as a cultural heritage and strengthen cultural identity among the younger generation. Conclusion: This study concludes that kebaya preservation efforts in the Medan campus environment by PBI have had a positive impact despite facing several challenges. Recommendations to strengthen this program include improving kebaya accessibility, better administrative support, and more intensive promotion through social media and campus activities.
