Formulation of Nanoemulsion Hair Serum with Mangkokan Leaf Extract (Polyscias scutellaria (Burm.f.) Fosberg) and Candlenut Oil (Aleurites moluccana (L.)) for White Male Rat Hair Growth
Abstract
Background: Hair is considered a crown for everyone, consisting of roots and hair shafts. Currently, serum formulations are popular to be easy to apply and easy to spread. The mangkokan leaf plant (Polyscias scutellaria (Burm.f.) Fosberg) and candlenut oil (Aleurites moluccana (L.)) exhibit hair growth activity with their respective beneficial contents.
Objective: To formulate and evaluate a hair serum nanoemulsion containing mangkokan leaf extract (Polyscias scutellaria (Burm.f.) Fosberg) and candlenut oil (Aleurites moluccana (L.)) for its effect on hair growth in male white rats.
Methods: Mangkokan leaf (Polyscias scutellaria (Burm.f.) Fosberg) extraction using maceration method with 70% ethanol then tested phytochemical screening and characterization. Nanoemulsion Hair Serum with Mangkokan Leaf Extract (Polyscias scutellaria (Burm.f.) Fosberg) and Candlenut Oil (Aleurites moluccana (L.)) varying concentrations (2,5%, 5%, 7,5%), emulsion containing 5% mangkokan leaf extract and 5% candlenut oil, and a blank without the addition of the extracts. Testing of preparations in the form of organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, emulsion type, particle size, centrifugation, cycling test (4°C±2°C and 40°C±2°C), at room temperature (25°C±2°), accelerated low temperature (4°C±2°C) and High Temperature (40 ° C±2 ° C). The hair serum nanoemulsions were applied twice daily to the shaved skin of rats, with hair length measured on days 7, 14, and 21, and hair weight measured on day 21.
Results: Hair serum nanoemulsions F1, F2, F3, light brown-dark brown colored emulsion, characteristic odor emulsion type m/a, homogeneous, stable in centrifugation test, pH 6.0-6.5 viscosity 230-420 cP, particle size 57-316 nm and rancid odor week 8 at room temperature storage. Test cycling test odor changes after storage of 6 cycles, stable at low-temperature storage (4°C±2°C), and odor changes after hot temperature storage (40°C±2 ° C). Nanoemulsion preparation of mangkokan leaf extract hair serum and hazelnut oil had hair growth activity with average hair length at day 21 on F1, F2, F3, emulsion, and blanko respectively 1,83 ±0,21 cm, 2,31±0,05 cm, 2,08±0,03 cm, 2,13±0,02 cm 0,75±0,02 cm. The average hair weight on the 21st day in F1, F2, F3, emulsion and blanko were 0,15± 0,01 g, 0,24±0,06 g, 0,18±0,00 g, 0,20±0,02 g, 0,1±0,02 g. As seen in the results of statistical tests for the five formulas there is a significant difference (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Mangkokan leaf extract and candlenut oil were successfully formulated into a hair serum nanoemulsion, demonstrating hair growth activity. The formula containing 5% mangkokan leaf extract and 5% candlenut oil was the most effective for hair growth.
