Survei Penggunaan Jenis Retainer Pasca Perawatan Ortodonti oleh Ortodontis di Indonesia

Abstract

One of the problems in orthodontic treatment is changes in tooth arrangement during the retention period. Orthodontic retention is the final stage of orthodontic treatment. Retention aims to maintain teeth in the corrected position after the completion of orthodontic tooth movement, preventing or minimizing returning to their original position or better known as relapse. Retention can be achieved with various appliance that are classified into 2, namely removable and fixed appliance. Retainers that are often used include Hawley retainers and their modifications, Essix retainers, fixed retainers and their modifications. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of the types of retainers most often used by orthodontists in Indonesia on maxillary and mandibular teeth. This study is a descriptive study in the form of a questionnaire sent to 71 orthodontists using the proportional sampling method to determine the number of respondents in each regional command in Indonesia and distributed in the form of a google form. This study showed that 100% of orthodontists use retainers. In the selection of retainers on the maxilla, the majority of respondents with a percentage of 47.9% chose the Essix retainer, using the Hawley retainer by 35.2%, using a fixed retainer by 12.7%, and those who chose depending on the case by 4.2%. While on the mandible, the majority of respondents with a percentage of 40.8% chose the Essix retainer, using the Hawley retainer by 33.8%, using a fixed retainer by 21.1%, and those who chose depending on the case by 4.2%. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that more orthodontists use the Essix retainer on the maxillary and mandibular teeth.
