Preparation and Characterization of Sulfonated Natural Rubber/Polystyrene Maleation Membrane with Divinyl Benzene as Crosslinking Agent
Abstract
This research examines the preparation and characterization of membranes with the main ingredients of natural rubber maleation and sulfonated polystyrene carried out through three stages. The first stage is the maleation of natural rubber where natural latex is dissolved in xylene and with the addition of maleic anhydrous and is carried out by refluxing until everything dissolves and becomes thick which is then characterized using the FT-IR test obtained the presence of a C = O group at a wave number of 1871 cm-1 which proves the existence of penggabugan between natural rubber and maleic anhydride. The second stage was the preparation of sulfonated polystyrene from used stryrofoam dissolved in chloroform solvent then added H2SO4 and carried out by reflux method for 4 hours at 60°C which was then dried and characterized by FT-IR test obtained at 1019.40 cm-1 for symmetric -SO3 stretch vibrations and 1166.95 cm-1 for S=O group vibrations. Hydroxyl group absorption was also observed at wave number 3437.15 which proves that there is an O-H bond in the SO3H group and a CEC value of 54.44% was tested. The last stage is the manufacture of membranes where by mixing thermaleated natural rubber and sulfonated polystyrene then added with crosslinking agents namely divinyl benzene and dkumil peroxide and characterized by FT-IR test to find out that natural rubber will be incorporated with crosslinking agents and SPS in the membrane then tested rheology to see the maturity of a membrane which shows that by increasing the amount of DVB, the curing time will decrease and tested with 3D Microscope which shows that in the ratio 70: 30:1:4 showed that the morphology of the membrane showed a more homogeneous surface.
