A denture is a device used to replace missing teeth and is supported by the underlying tissue and a portion of the remaining natural teeth used as abutment teeth. Denture disinfection can be done using non-traditional disinfection such as chlorhexidine and traditional ones such as castor leaf extract (Ricinus communis). Castor leaves (Ricinus communis) have chemical compounds that can work as anti-fungal in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans, such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids, as well as phenolics that can affect the mechanical properties of acrylic resins such as surface roughness and transverse strength. The purpose of this study was to determine the value and effect of disinfection of castor leaf extract (Ricinus communis) 25% and 0.2% chlorhexidine on surface roughness and transverse strength of hot polymerized acrylic resin denture bases for 1 and 2 years simulation. The design of this study was experimental laboratory with post test only with control group design. The research results were tested using the univariate test and T test. The results of the T test on the surface roughness value showed the effect of disinfection of 25% (Ricinus communis) and 0.2% chlorhexidine for the 1-year simulation with a p value = 0.004 (p < 0.05) and for the 2-year simulation with a p value = 0.045 (p < 0.05), and the effect on the transverse strength of the 1 and 2-year simulations with a p value = 0.000 (p < 0.05). Based on this study, the surface roughness and transverse strength values after disinfection of castor leaf extract (Ricinus communis) 25% are still within the ISO standard limits so that castor leaf extract (Ricinus communis) 25% can be used as an alternative material for denture disinfection.
