Achieving proper hygiene and sanitation such as having healthy latrines is one of
the sustainable development goals of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
Globally, as many as 3.4 million people/year cause of death from diarrhea due to
poor sanitation through water-borne disease. Community-based total sanitation is
a community empowerment program in the field of sanitation where activities are
directed at changing behavior from open defecation to a certain place
(latrine/latrine). This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the habit of
open defecation in Muara Sipongi Mandailing Natal District. This type of
research is quantitative with cross sectional design. The population and sample
are 200 households that do not have a latrine. The results showed that there was
an influence on knowledge, distance from home and water availability, each p
value = 0.001 (p <0.05) with open defecation habits. Then the variable that has
the most influence on the habit of open defecation is the knowledge variable with
a p value = 0.001 and Exp value (B) = 9,913 (95% CI 2,757–35,647). It is
suggested to the community that it is necessary to carry out activities to increase
knowledge about health so that the community consciously wishes to change open
defecation behavior to defecate in latrines.
